Comfort Reimagined
Below Elbow Socket for a Young Amputee
Patient: Vicky
Age: 32 | Occupation: Office Assistant
Condition: Traumatic amputation below the elbow (4 years ago)
Previous Device: Carbon-fiber socket (traditional)
The Challenge
After his accident, Vicky used a carbon-fiber socket that was heavy, bulky, and often uncomfortable during long work hours. Suspension was poor, resulting in frequent adjustments and reduced confidence in functional activities like writing or lifting light objects.
The Addiwise Solution – A Digital Transformation
- Scan: Using the AddiScan handheld scanner, an accurate 3D model of Vicky’s residual limb was captured without the need for plaster casting.
- Design: A custom-fit socket was digitally modeled using AddiNxT, with ergonomic trimlines and optimized contours to improve comfort and suspension.
- Print: The socket was produced using HP MJF technology, printed in PA12, ensuring lightweight strength and precision fit.
The Outcome
- Significant weight reduction improved long-term wear comfort
- Superior suspension and alignment, increasing control and grip confidence
- Faster donning and doffing, enabling independence at work
Vicky can now perform daily office tasks comfortably, including typing, carrying documents, and assisting others.
“I don’t feel like I’m wearing a device anymore. It feels like part of me.” – Vicky
